Can you connect PEX pipe directly to a hot water heater?
Generally, standard building codes (such as IPC and UPC) prohibit connecting PEX piping directly to the inlet and outlet of a water heater if it is a gas-fired unit, due to heat radiation from the flue. A metallic transition pipe (such as copper or flexible stainless steel) of at least 18 inches must be installed first. For electric water heaters, direct connection is sometimes permitted, but using a metallic transition is still recommended to protect the PEX from high thermal conductivity at the connection nipples.
What are the advantages of PPSU fittings over brass for water heater lines?
PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone) fittings offer high chemical resistance, are lead-free, and are immune to dezincification—a corrosion process that can affect brass fittings in aggressive water conditions.
