Cross-linking changes the molecular structure of polyethylene. It transforms a thermoplastic polymer into a thermoset-like network with high structural stability. The PE-Xb manufacturing process utilizes silane chemistry (often referred to as the two-step Sioplas process or the one-step Monosil process). Vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) is grafted onto the polyethylene backbone in the presence of an organic peroxide initiator.
Following extrusion, the pipe is exposed to moisture (warm water baths or steam chambers), where hydrolysis and condensation reactions occur. This process creates siloxane (Si-O-Si) cross-links between the polymer chains. Under standard EN ISO 15875, PE-Xb must achieve a minimum cross-linking degree of 65%. This cross-linking density protects the pipe from environmental stress cracking (ESCR) and maintains creep resistance under high operating temperatures and hydrostatic pressures.
